Magic Johnson is the latest to weigh in on the Kyrie Irving vaccine controversy. Appearing on CBS News, Magic revealed that he should get the vaccine in support of his teammates.
“You have said to your teammates, ‘I’m gonna be there for you,’” Johnson said. “Well, you can’t be there if you don’t get vaccinated. You letting them down. And then that hurts our chances of winning a championship. I would never do that to my teammates. Never.”
Magic would go on to detail that he received his shots and that he felt it was important to let social media know. “I wanted, especially my community to know, first of all, it’s safe. And the players, again, people listen to them, they follow them. That’s very important.”
Kyrie Irving will have no interaction with the Brooklyn Nets as they gear up to get ready to start the season. ESPN reports, Nets general manager Sean Marks announced Irving has been sent away from the team until he decides to be fully vaccinated.
“My job here is to make what we deem as the best decision and best choices for the organization moving ahead as a whole,” Marks said on Tuesday. “They’re not always ones that are going to be met with open arms and a thumbs-up. These are hard decisions. Just like I’m sure it wasn’t easy for Kyrie either to have to make that [decision] to not be around his teammates.”
