Liz Gilliam Uses Fandom to Inspire Black Women with E-616 Consulting

Liz Gilliam has always had a passion for education. With academic credentials, including a doctorate in education, Gilliam has worked as a teacher, social worker, and professor. However, she found that traditional educational settings often dismissed her research interests, which focused on critical topics like Black girls, critical race theory, and fandom. Rather than abandoning these important subjects, Gilliam founded her company, E-616 Consulting, to facilitate meaningful conversations around popular culture and self-care for black women.

Self-described as a ‘Blerd’ (Black nerd), Gilliam has been a trailblazer in using fandoms to teach Black women and girls what they can accomplish. Gilliam became enthralled with fandoms as early as the 90s with groups like Immature. Now, Marvel has captured her heart. She uses her educational background to break down complex topics and make them relatable. Her experience as a social worker gave her empathy to meet people where they are, guiding them forward in their growth. Her academic research and analysis skills help Gilliam synthesize these techniques to reach a broader audience.

The biggest challenge for Gilliam is reaching Blerd girls and letting them know they have a community. Endless fandoms and countless black women are participating without realizing the broader support systems available to them. This community includes many black women-owned businesses that Gilliam supports by purchasing merchandise, food, and collectibles. Gilliam uses the messages found within this community to remind black women to enjoy themselves and practice self-care amidst their busy lives. She encourages them to carve out time to enjoy things they love while learning about themselves.

One of Gilliam’s favorite educational projects has been a series of classes using Marvel characters to help teachers better understand their students. Enabling teachers to view challenging students from a redemptive perspective fostered rewarding connections. As a former challenging student herself, Gilliam understood both sides.

Gilliam’s unique educational approach identifies parallels between fictional fandoms and real life. Analyzing characters like Queen Ramonda and Shuri, who process grief in Black Panther, can help black women recognize their inner strength during difficult times.

In an exciting turn for Gilliam, her company E-616 Consulting was selected as one of 70 startups to participate in Season 10 of The Blox, the largest startup competition TV show. Gilliam applied on a whim and was thrilled to be chosen. Since filming, her business has evolved slightly but still centers on Gilliam and her mission. The episode will air on Prime Video, providing exciting exposure for E-616 Consulting.

E-616 Consulting’s upcoming projects are diverse and engaging. Plans include educational content inspired by “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and a course titled “Hot Girl Summer,” focusing on the empowerment narratives of female rap artists. These initiatives reflect Gilliam’s commitment to creating content that resonates with her audience on a cultural and personal level.

Looking ahead, Gilliam envisions hosting a Blerd Girl Self-Care Con. This unique convention would blend cosplay and fandom discussions with personal growth and self-care topics, catering specifically to Black women. She also aspires to participate in major events like San Diego Comic-Con to broaden her reach and impact within the fandom community.

Rather than fitting into traditional educational roles, Liz Gilliam followed her passion. Her business is a testament to the power of blending passion with purpose, offering a new narrative for Black women, inspired by the fandoms she holds so dear. Gilliam’s journey is not just about the success of a Black-owned business; it’s about challenging norms, celebrating diversity, and empowering a community often sidelined in mainstream fandom culture. As she continues to innovate and inspire, Gilliam is undoubtedly paving the way for a more inclusive and dynamic future for Black women entrepreneurs and fans alike.
