DOOMED: How a Quarantine Web Series Idea Became an International Festival Favorite

DOOMED, the brainchild of creators Helen Sun and Laura Malatos, promises to redefine the future of sitcoms. The series chronicles the escapades of a tight-knit group of college friends unexpectedly confined to a bunker for 30 days during what was meant to be a routine apocalypse drill.

Originally conceived as a modest web series inspired by the creators’ close friend group from college, DOOMED took shape around the curiosity of how chaotic and comedic scenarios might unfold in dire circumstances. However, the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic provided an unexpected opportunity to expand the concept. With the backdrop of global isolation and thoughts of looming doom, they transformed their idea into a fully scripted series with the help of a small virtual writers’ room. Despite delays in filming the pilot until the summer of 2022, the project maintained momentum, buoyed by the cast and crew’s lasting commitment.

The show’s potential was vividly brought to life by its talented cast, including Daisy Fernandez from Issa Rae’s “Rap Sh*t” and Jalina Brown, a lead in Lifetime’s “Secrets on Campus.” Their performances garnered an overwhelmingly positive reception for the pilot, marking a significant turning point – an executive producer attachment of the industry veteran Peter Cameron, an Emmy-nominated writer and producer at Marvel.

In part, this incredible talent and momentum is how DOOMED found success on the festival circuit, earning global acclaim and securing distribution deals. The series aired on UK’s KMTV, Sheffield Live!, and NVTV, and streamed on ROKU. Now, it is poised for wider recognition with upcoming debuts on Amazon Prime and potential airing on PBS SoCal.

From its humble beginnings as a web series concept to its current status as a highly anticipated show, DOOMED embodies the power of collaboration and a unique vision. As the creators and cast eagerly anticipate filming the rest of the series, DOOMED stands as a testament to perseverance, creativity, and impeccable timing, capturing the audience’s attention and imagination.
