Exclusive: Jadakiss Speaks on Performing at Essence Fest with AT&T

AT&T is set to celebrate Black culture and community at this year’s ESSENCE Festival of Culture, which will mark its 30th anniversary from July 4 to 7 in New Orleans, LA. AT&T will offer an array of experiences for this milestone event through music, mentorship, panel discussions, and immersive activations.

The AT&T Dream in Black connected stage within the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center will feature a dynamic lineup of performances that pay tribute to the music shaping the last three decades of Black artistry. Jadakiss will headline the stage, among other influential artists and entertainers.

The Source had the chance to sit down with hip-hop legend Jadakiss, who shared his excitement about returning to the ESSENCE Festival and performing on the AT&T Dream in Black connected stage. “The city’s got the vibe, the soul, and the stories of Black culture all around us,” Jadakiss said. “It’s about celebrating where we’ve come from and where we’re headed. This performance is a shout-out to our roots, a celebration of our strength, and a step toward community and connection.”

Essence Fest is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. How does it feel to be headlining such a milestone event?
It’s so cool to be a part of such a milestone event celebrating ESSENCE Fest’s 30th birthday with a headlining performance at the AT&T Dream in Black connected stage. I’m looking forward to connecting with my fans and reflecting on the last three decades of art, culture and entertainment within the Black community through my music.

Your music has been influential for decades. What can fans expect from your performance at Essence Fest, and will there be any special surprises or collaborations?
The AT&T Dream in Black connected stage is the place to be at ESSENCE Fest and my fans can expect a performance that will pay tribute to the rich heritage of Black music and culture while looking forward to an exciting future and what is to come. As for any special surprises… I don’t want to give away anything before the performance!

Essence Fest is known for celebrating Black culture and music. How important is it for you to perform at an event that highlights and uplifts the Black community?
Being back in New Orleans for ESSENCE Fest is such an exciting feeling, especially for such a landmark occasion like the 30th anniversary. ESSENCE Fest is one of my favorite times of year and it’s an honor to be able to perform at an event that uplifts, celebrates and connects the Black community.

Reflecting on your career, what moments or achievements stand out to you as you prepare to take the stage at this iconic festival?
I always look forward to performing at ESSENCE because it is a festival for the people and I am an artist for the people.

What message do you hope to convey through your performance to both longtime fans and new listeners who will be experiencing your music at Essence Fest?
I want new fans and longtime listeners of my music to feel connected to each other and to their roots during my set at the AT&T Dream in Black connected stage. I hope to create a sense of community that unites everyone and gets them excited about the rich history of Black culture through the evolution of my music while we honor New Orleans and all it has to offer.
