Snoop Dogg faces a significant backlash after performing at an event celebrating Donald Trump’s inauguration, with a noticeable drop in his social media following. According to the New York Post, the rap legend has lost over 571,000 followers on Instagram since performing at the Crypto Ball on January 17, where Rick Ross and Soulja Boy also took the stage.
Additionally, Snoop’s presence on X (formerly Twitter) has declined, with nearly 20,000 followers unfollowing him. Despite the loss, Snoop still enjoys a massive social media presence, boasting more than 88 million followers on Instagram and over 20 million on X.
The 53-year-old rapper has been under heavy scrutiny since his performance at the pro-Trump event and his interactions with far-right influencers and MAGA supporters. Critics have pointed out the apparent contradiction, especially since Snoop had previously criticized Black artists who performed at Trump’s 2017 inauguration. One former Barack Obama staffer called him a “sellout,” accusing him of hypocrisy.
In response to the growing criticism, Snoop Dogg remained defiant. “Y’all can’t hate enough on me for me, I love too much. Get your life right, stop worrying about mine,” he said in an Instagram video. “I’m cool, I’m together. Still a Black man. Still a hundred percent Black. I ain’t going nowhere, cuh! I’m right here. Get the Crypto on Crip, though.”
Addressing his Black critics directly, Snoop emphasized the importance of unity within the community: “We gotta learn to pick each other up instead of pulling each other down. That’s what we’re great at as Black people, we’re great at tearing each other down. You can be up one minute, and they try to pull you down the next.”
Despite the criticism, the rap icon remains confident in his stance. “I’m a strong Black man, I’m cut from a different cloth. You can’t tear me down. I’m one of God’s children, and I’m taking the load.”
Snoop Dogg, who was once a vocal critic of Trump, has since softened his stance, particularly after the former president pardoned Death Row co-founder Michael “Harry O” Harris in early 2021. In a 2023 interview with The Sunday Times, Snoop said, “Donald Trump? He ain’t done nothing wrong to me. He has done only great things for me. He pardoned Michael Harris. So I have nothing but love and respect for Donald Trump.”
