Jeezy is lifting the veil on a moment in music history that fans never saw coming. In a recent interview, the Atlanta rap icon shared that he was once featured on Beyoncé’s smash single “Drunk In Love” before being quietly cut from the final version. And the person who made that call was none other than Jay-Z himself.
According to Jeezy, he had recorded a verse for the 2013 hit before it turned into the Grammy-winning duet that solidified Beyoncé and Jay-Z as pop culture royalty. But when the song dropped, his vocals were nowhere to be found.
“I dropped the ball when I wrote my verse for ‘Drunk In Love’ for Beyoncé,” Jeezy revealed. “Hov called me. He’s like, ‘I took you off the song. By the way, I’m on there.’ I was like, ‘I figured that.’ It’s on someone’s drive. Tell Bey we need to put that out. It’s some vintage.”
Jeezy also recounted the rare studio session where all three were present while he was working on the record. “He came in the room and she’s like, ‘You got something for this?’ You know, I’m going in. It sounded crazy. This is her song, but I’m just trying to go hard. He probably like, ‘Oh nah. We no putting that out.’”
Though the world never got to hear Jeezy’s version, “Drunk In Love” went on to dominate the charts and win a Grammy for Best R&B Performance. Can’t ignore those what ifs, though.
