On Wednesday, January 14, 2015, President Barack Obama addressed an audience in Cedar Falls, Iowa before a backdrop of common household tools.  The setting was almost indicative of the “repairs” Obama said he would make to obsolete laws that halt the development of small business owners and technology start-ups.

According to the President, currently about 98% of Americans have access to the most basic level of Internet but in order to succeed on a broad scale, Americans need better access to high-speed Internet in order to keep abreast of new software and data influxes.  “We’ve got to keep pace.  We’ve got to be up to speed,”  he announced.

Community coalitions such as Next Generation Cities want to bring high-speed broadband Internet access to various American cities for much cheaper prices but face the challenge of state laws that restrict competition against major conglomerate Internet service providers.

Specifically, President Obama said he was directing the Federal Trade Commission to lift laws that slow the expansion of broadband Internet.  Further, the Department of Commerce is being directed to offer technical assistance and the Department of Agriculture will offer loans for rural broadband providers.

These plans will be expounded upon at the State of the Union address on Tuesday, January 20, 2015.
