So far, Straight Outta Compton, which was notably snubbed at the Golden Globes, has already snagged a nomination for Best Original Screenplay. The summer blockbuster biopic, directed by F. Gary Gray, chronicled controversial rap group N.W.A‘s rise to prominence in the late 80’s and early 90’s and grossed $200 million worldwide. Film critics have predicted it has an outside chance of being granted a Best Picture nomination, and that announcement will come shortly.

On the music tip, The Weeknd‘s Fifty Shades of Grey hit, “Earned It,” which also ended up on his Beauty Behind The Madness album–Madness is inching towards one million copies sold–was nominated for Best Original Song, alongside Sam Smith‘s searing Spectre opener, and Lady Gaga‘s “‘Til It Happens To You” from Hunting Ground. Wiz Khalifa‘s “See You Again,” one of the biggest songs of the year and the first rap song to garner 1 million views on YouTube, is notably missing from the nominations. He was nominated for a Golden Globe.
