According to deputy mayor Ahmed El Khannouss, a major police operation took place on Friday [March 18] in the Brussels neighborhood of Molenbeek, where Abdeslam was shot in the leg and arrested as police and the suspects exchanged gunfire. Two other suspects were also taken into custody, French president Francois Hollande said.

The raid and subsequent investigation show more people were involved in the Paris attacks than anti-terror officials originally thought. The November 13, 2015 gun and bomb attacks killed 130 people at a theatre, the national stadium and various cafes around the city.

Hollande also said France will seek Abdeslam’s extradition, which should happen quickly because of Belgium’s cooperation. The arrest is a dramatic turn of events into the perplexing event, one that has puzzled Europe officials for months.
