Manchester United finished in fifth place in the Barclay’s Premier League this year, missing out on the Champion’s League next season. Manchester United has under-performed for several seasons now, missing out the Champions League for the third straight season. They last won the league in 2013, when Sir Alex Ferguson was still their head coach.

Mourinho was fired at the end of 2015 from Chelsea, after suffering one of the worst title defenses the Premier League had ever seen. Mourinho has been a polarizing figure throughout his career, and his end at Chelsea was disastrous for both the club and his reputation.

José is succeeding Louie Van Gaal at Manchester United, who struggled to get the players to produce on the field, and to win over the supports of the club that have come to expect greatness every season. His first order of business will be to overhaul the team’s roster and bring in new, top-class players. Zlatan Ibrahimović has been heavily rumored as José’s number one transfer target, so that deal may come through in the near future.
