Audrey Wells, a screenwriter from the recently released film The Hate U Give, passed away on Thursday from her battle with cancer, just one day before her film hit the theaters. Wells was 58.

The film’s official Twitter account gave their condolences to Wells’ family about her death.

Wells assimilated the movie with the 2007 novel of the same name by Angie Thomas. The film stars Amandla Stenberg and focuses on the aftermath of a police-involved shooting of an unarmed black man.

Wells previously wrote the scripts for the films The Truth About Cats and Dogs, George of the Jungle, A Dog’s Purpose and Under the Tuscan Sun. Wells’ animated film Over The Moon, is currently in production at Netflix.
