This morning, 28 year old George Zimmerman appeared before a judge in Seminole County, Florida for a bond hearing. Entering the courtroom wearing a suit and tie, the Neighborhood Watch volunteer that shot and killed unarmed 17 year old Trayvon Martin received bond set at $150,000, which can set him free if he comes up with 10% through a bail bondsman. His father, retired federal Judge Robert Zimmerman says he will mortgage his home in order to secure bond for his son.

In a shocking turn of events, Zimmerman could be released as soon as tomorrow if his bail requirements are met. If he is released, he must wear a GPS tracking device to avoid him from absconding. He is also not allowed to possess a firearm, drink alcohol, and he was given a 6pm curfew. His attorney offered that he be allowed to leave the state and not reveal his whereabouts for Zimmerman’s safety, which Judge Kenneth Lester granted.

Character witnesses included his wife Shelly Zimmerman, his mother Gladys and his father Robert. Zimmerman’s family members were called to testify via telephone because of obvious safety reasons.

Zimmerman even took the stand himself, using the opportunity to apologize to the parents of the unarmed youth that he pursued then shot on the evening of February 26. In the only time he had to speak to the parents of Trayvon Martin, an obviously scared Zimmerman states, “I wanted to say I’m sorry for the loss of your son. I did not know how young he was. I did not know he was armed or not”.

Zimmerman is scheduled to be arraigned on charges of second degree murder on May 29.
