Our explanation as to why “BOTL” made this list will do little to justify our reasons compared to what pressing play on track 7 from Kanye West’s latest LP, Yeezus, can do. As Billie Holiday’s historic 1939 record “Strange Fruit” slowly cues in the background, Ye’s introspective lyrics are delivered over a pensive set of piano keys. Narrative becomes a frantic wail, and seemingly out of nowhere, Hudson Mohawke’s roof-shattering horn-laden 808’s enter the room. You can literally feel the air in the room become consumed with the unbelievably powerful sounds, only made better by the tranquil mood set by the Billie Holiday sample. Yeezus, y’all.
