New Jack City (1991) New Jack

Perhaps one of the most iconic movies to come out of the 90s, New Jack City redefined the urban crime drama, peppering the genre with an exciting and exhilarating dose of street action and insight into hood politics.

The high-stakes drama that was New Jack City centers around drug kingpin Nino Brown and his ascension as the head of the crack and crime syndicate the Cash Money Brothers. Ice-T, also stars in the film as an undercover detective who vows to take down Nino Brown. Most importantly the film centers around the souring “brotherly love” relationship between Nino and his right hand man, G-Money. Referenced countless times since then, the film is truly a classic.

One of the most unforgettable moments of the movie was the point at which Nino Brown reinforces the meaning of loyalty and brotherhood with his CMB crew, asking them the key question “Am I My Brother’s Keeper?”. Given the eventual fate that befell the CMB, the scene is chilling.
