Most 90’s babies would agree that very little evoked genuine terror in their hearts like R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps novels and the concurrent television show. With stories of a manic ventriloquist dummy, half-human half-plant mutants and spaghetti-turned-worms, the Goosebumps series mastered children’s literary horror and repulsiveness.
Now, just like most nightmares, Goosebumps has creeped its way back — but this time in art form. A collective of over 40 international artists illustrated pieces for the Monster Edition zine, featuring artwork capturing the terrifying nostalgia that was the Goosebumps series. Favorites like “Night of The Living Dummy” and “Attack of the Jack-O-Lanterns” have all been reimagined into eerie but visually striking works of art that make the original cover art look like 1st grade noodle art.
Curated by Toronto-denizens Sabrina Parolin and Jennifer Ilett, Monster Edition was developed because of their connection to the Goosebumps television show and books. “The impact of this series obviously left a longstanding impression on us both so we decided to organize this project to create some fun art that re-imagined some of our favorite stories!” the twosome told the Huffington Post in an interview. “We also thought it would be a great opportunity to collaborate with other artists we admire who also felt a connection with this series from our childhood.” Check out a few samples from the collection in the pages below and cop Monster Edition here … if you dare.
