If you’re familiar with J. Cole‘s rise to prominence as an emcee and producer, you already know what a pivotal role the New York borough of Queens plays in his backstory. It was in the Big Apple’s second most populous borough that a young Jermaine Cole honed his craft behind the boards and in the booth, while attending St. John’s University. From there he would go on to land a deal with Jay Z and the rest, as the say, is history.

Cole returned to Queens County to take part in the first night of Vh1’s Super Bowl Blitz: Six Nights, Six Concerts, a series of shows that, as the title suggests, will lead music lovers into pro football’s big dance.

The self-proclaimed Born Sinner ran through his plethora of hits at Queens College, the setting for the series kickoff, including fan favorites like “Can’t Get Enough”, “Power Trip” sans Miguel, and “She Knows”.

Janelle Monae will take the baton next as she and ATLien Big Boi are set to invade Lehman College in the Bronx tonight for night number 2. She’ll be followed by Fall Out Boy at the Brooklyn Bowl on Wednesday, TLC at Manhattan’s Beacon Theatre (with special guests Nelly and the legendary Doug E. Fresh) on Thursday, Goo Goo Dolls in Staten Island at St. George Theatre on Friday,  and finally Gavin DeGraw in New Jersey at The Wellmont Theatre on Saturday.

Be sure to tune in to Vh1 to catch each night. Check out J. Cole’s set above.
