8. The Bombing of the Atlanta Games
Atlanta faced the tyranny of terrorists during the 1996 Olympic games. An 40-pipe bomb exploded in Centennial Olympic Park after an anonymous 911 called and warned police. Alice Hawthorne, 44, of Albany, Ga., and Melih Uzunyol, 40, a Turkish cameraman died and more than 100 people were injured. It was later discovered that the “terrorist” was Eric Robert Rudolph, who was already a suspect in the bombing of several abortion clinics. He was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences, or 120 years in prison.
