9. US Boycott’s Games
In 1980, Moscow hosted the Summer Olympics after the Soviets had invaded Afghanistan. The US issued the ultimatum that if the Soviets didn’t pull out in one month there would be a boycott of the Summer games and no American athlete would compete. America stood by its boycott and other countries followed suite. The games went on as planned but even the remaining competing teams opened and closed the games with the Olympic flags rather than their native flags.
