16-year-old Maren Sanchez killed by fellow classmate on day of junior prom
16-year-old Milford, Connecticut teen Maren Sanchez was fatally stabbed to death Friday morning, which happened to be the day of her high school’s junior prom.
According to the NY Times, authorities have arrested an unidentified 16-year-old male who has allegedly been charged with murder, as a juvenile.
The attack is said to have occurred at approximately 7:15 a.m., just shortly before the school day was set to begin. After hearing a disturbing scream, students were immediately taken into classrooms, where they were told to stay. Beneath a hall stairwell, Sanchez was discovered. She had been stabbed in the neck, chest and face.
Though no official rulings have been made on any possible motives, investigators have reason to believe that Sanchez declined the suspect’s invitation to the prom, which ultimately led to the attack.
16-year-old junior Tyler Curtin, who had known both Sanchez and the suspect since the sixth grade, gave a statement saying the suspect was torn when Sanchez shot down his prom invitation. “He liked her for a while, she just got a new boyfriend.”
Despite the school’s staff members desperately attempting to revive Sanchez, she was pronounced dead at Bridgeport Hospital at 7:43 a.m.
Acting as a spokesman for the family, Sanchez’s cousin, Edward Kovac, gave a statement to the public saying, “The unprovoked attack on Maren this morning has unfortunately for our family resulted in the permanent loss of Maren Victoria Sanchez, a bright light full of hopes and dreams with her future at her fingertips.” He went on to add that, “Maren should be celebrating at her prom this evening with her friends and classmates. Instead, we are mourning her death and we are trying as a community to understand the senseless loss of life.”
