When I arrived at The Blind Barber it was clear the space is much more than the classically decorated barbershop you see from the street. Although people were getting their hair done along with fancy shaves, the vibe of the place and the super hip people milling around let me know that I had arrived at ‘Speakeazy’, a whiskey tasting event put on by G-Eazy and hosted by Va$htie.

Through a door in the back of the shop we entered into the speakeasy. With black and white tiled floors, antique pictures on the walls and leather booths, the place had a really cool feel that the term “old school” doesn’t seem to give justice to.

G-Eazy’s signature slicked back hair and all black outfit combined with his towering height made him eazy to spot in the dark, dark room of only about 30 people. The 8 whiskeys to be tasted were lined up down the bar, and were all quite good. The 10 year Eagle Rare being my favorite of the night. DJ Quiz, a friend of G’s, spun a great mix of today’s hip hop, finishing the night off with a few of his homie’s own including “Let’s Get Lost,” “I Been On” and “Far Alone.”

G-Eazy made his rounds through the groups of people and was friendly, suave and chill. Talking with him we got on the topic of the video for his song, “I Mean It” that came out in May. The video features G as a buttoned up news reporter calmly stating his lyrics to the camera on the nightly news and at one point interviewing himself. This slightly comedic turn is a new one for G-Eazy. He explained to me that him mean muggin’ on a car, with champagne and girls in tow doesn’t tend to work so well with his unique look, so a bit of a parody was something he had fun with.

Having never been to a whiskey tasting before I figured I should ask G, a whiskey man himself, how it’s done. When I asked him if I should be swirling, smelling and picking up on notes he shook his head with a grin, bringing his glass to his lips and told me, “Naw I just drink it.”
