A Muslim woman is accusing a flight attendant form United Airlines of discriminating against her because of her religion. According to Bossip, Tahera Ahmad was on a flight from Chicago to Washington, DC when a flight attendant bought over an open can of diet coke. Ahmad says that she asked the flight attendant to please bring a closed can to her because of hygienic reasons. Ahmad says that the flight attendant told her that it was against United Airlines policy to give unopened beverages to people.
Ahmad says that the flight attendant then took the can back and said, “No diet coke for you”. Not long after, the same flight attendant then gave a passenger an unopened can of beer. Ahmad, a Chaplain at Northwestern University confronted the flight attendant about giving the passenger an unopened can of beer when the flight attendant blurted out, “It’s against our policy to give people unopened can beverages because because they may use it as a weapon.”
Ahmad says that she was in shock and told the flight attendant that she found it strange that the flight attendant would be in fear that she would create a weapon with the can but gave an unopened can to the passenger next her. The flight attendant replied, “It’s because you would use it as a weapon.”
United Airlines has apologized to Ahmad for the incident and says that it was a “misunderstanding”. Do you think this was a “misunderstanding” or was Ahmad discriminated against because of her religion?
