Jeremy David Mardis is now the youngest person to be shot and killed by the police this year, after his father, Chris Few, struck police cars with his vehicle as he tried to get away from city marshals looking to serve him a warrant.
Mardis was sitting in the passenger seat while Few drove, and in the process of fleeing, after Few hit the cops’ cars, two of them opened fire. He would sustain treatable injuries and would be taken to the hospital, but his autistic son, Mardis, who was in first-grade, would be struck by bullets five times in the chest and head, and those injuries would prove to be fatal.
The incident is a tragic one that has gripped the community of Marksville, Louisiana, and the superintendent of the Avoyelles Parish School district had this to say about the saddening news.
“We are deeply saddened by this loss. It was a tragedy and we have had a rough couple of days around here dealing with it. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family in this extremely trying time.”
