Since narrowly missing out on a calendar Grand Slam at last year’s U.S. Open, Serena Williams has struggled to find her stride, losing at the Australian Open earlier this year, and again at the BNP Paribas Open Finals this weekend at Indian Wells, an arena that carries weighty significance for Williams.
The #8 player in the world, Victoria Azarenka, defeated Serena in straight sets (6-4, 6-4), and seemed to be more shocked and surprised by her victory than elated, and let loose with an emotional celebration after she secured the victory.
That celebration included a dab, which on a scale of Ed Werder to Rihanna errs on the Rihanna side of the spectrum, so that’s good. It’s also far from the worst thing to happen at Indian Wells involving Serena, which is also a silver lining for Williams, who is still the #1 player in the world despite this loss.
