On Friday, April 22, the 75th Annual Peabody Award winners were announced in the Entertainment and Children’s program category. The organization’s goal is “to recognize excellence in a wide range of electronic media.” Founded in 1940, the group initially set out to celebrate stellar radio shows. Soon after, they expanded their criteria to television, cable television and, most recently, the internet.
When voting, board members ask: Does this story matter? Is it a story that needs telling? Does it inform us as citizens or help us empathize with one another? To win a Peabody, a program must receive the unanimous approval of all Peabody Board members.
Beasts of No Nation, starring Idris Elba, was honored for never losing sight of the characters’ humanity. ABC hit black-ish was honored for its insights about race, class, guns, and other hot-button topics. Aziz Ansari‘s show Master Of None was honored for resonating with young adult audiences while Mr. Robot was honored for taking an anti-corporation stance in a unique way.
