The dynamic and relationship between Kanye West and Taylor Swift has been fascinating since the fateful 2009 MTV VMAs. For many years, Swift and West had no relationship, but gradually they became friendly. One would even say, back when Swift was requesting brunch with Jay Z and posting for pictures with Kimye, that they were friends. Even if it was just for a short period of time.
Recent events, however, has soured that relationship. Last summer, Taylor presented Kanye West with the VMA Vanguard award at the VMAs, arguably the most full-circle pop culture moment of either generation, but this February, the two were at odds again. Kanye opens his The Life of Pablo hit, “Famous,” with “For all my southside n*ggas that know me best / I feel like, me and Taylor might still have sex, why? / I made that b*tch faaaamous / I made that b*tch faaaamous.” Kanye’s team–meaning, Kanye and Kim Kardashian West–were adamant about the fact that Taylor and her team were contacted about the line prior to Ye’s live-streamed Pablo listening session, and it was approved. Naturally, Swift’s team denies that allegation, and the beef was back on.
In a recent episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kim, who rarely publicly denounces anybody, especially a fellow celebrity, was pretty straightforward with her distaste for the way Swift has handled the situation. Kardashian avoids overtly calling Taylor a liar, but she does state that Swift sang a tune other than dissent when “Famous” was allegedly discussed between the two sides.
I never talk shit about anyone publicly, especially in interviews. But I was just, like, I had so had it. I just felt like I wanted to defend him in it because it’s like, she legitimately quote says, ‘As soon as I get on that Grammy red carpet I’m gonna tell all the press. Like I was in on it.’ [It was] just another way to play the victim. It definitely got her a lot of attention the first time.
Needless to say, the light friendship that appeared to be forming between Swift and the Wests has dissipated.
