It’s been two weeks since the devastation of category 4 Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico damaging the island and taking so many lives. Today, President Donald Trump is finally going to visit the island to physically see the damage. This comes after his attack on Twitter on Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz and her inability to be an effective leader.
The 45th was distracted by the NFL and had over a dozen tweets about how disrespectful it was that players were kneeling during the national anthem. The United States has an obligation to Puerto Rico as it is one of our U.S. territories however it seemed as if Trump had no concern for the island. However when hurricanes recently hit Texas and Florida, he was more responsive to this.
Puerto Rico is currently out of electricity and is in high demand for aid and supplies. Over 3 million people are struggling to survive on the island. Mayor Cruz pleaded, “We are dying here”. In response to that, Trump tweeted that Puerto Rico wants everything done for them. Given his past history on his feelings towards others of a different race, this should come as no surprise to anyone.
Trump needs to do something and do something fast to aid the residents of Puerto Rico. Although some electricity has been restored, and some residents have received water, the main issue is how to distribute the water and supplies to people. Roads are impossible to travel on or are completely damaged. We’ll stay tuned to see what the 45th has to say once he lands.
