If you ever attend a Broadway musical, there is an etiquette that is a part of being in the audience. But if we know anything about Kanye West, he doesn’t really care about etiquette or rules no matter where he is. But this time Mr. West was called out for his behavior and disregard for the rules of Broadway theatre.
Monday was the opening night of The Cher Show, which made its premiere on Broadway. After about an hour into the performance, noticing Mr. West on his phone during the show, Jarrod Butler who’s starring as Sonny Bono, jumped on Twitter to call out Mr. West’s behavior. West was accompanied by his wife, Kim Kardashian West, who is a self-proclaimed Cher stan.
According to Mr. West’s representative, he was simply just taking notes on his phone. In a rare showing of regret and yes humility, Mr. West offered an explanation and even an apology on social media. West said, “the dynamics of Cher and Sonny’s relationship made Kim and I grab each other’s hand and sing ‘I got you babe’ please pardon my lack of etiquette. We have so much appreciation for the energy you guys put into making this master piece.”
There has been an increase in people attending Broadway shows and interpreting the performances by using their cellphones. Some actors have even stopped their shows to address the matter. As a performer himself, Mr. West understands how an audience can either make or break a performance.
Hey @kanyewest so cool that you’re here at @TheCherShow! If you look up from your cell phone you’ll see we’re doing a show up here. It’s opening night. Kind of a big deal for us. Thanks so much.
