OD Quake hails from North Philadelphia, PA. He began his career in music in 2008 after falling in love with rap at the age of 14. Now he is signed to Montana of 300’s record label, Fly Guy Entertainment. Check out his interview below as he speaks on navigating his artistry.

How long have you been doing what you’re doing and how did you get started in the first place?

I’ve been doing music for 14 years, my mom always played music and sing to me and my sister since we was baby’s, we listened to music all day and I loved it so I just started rapping everyday when I got home from school.

2. Who were the first influences on your music and style?

Boyz II Men, Dmx, Ja Rule & Biggie

3. In your opinion who is the most influential and successful artist in your genre today and why?

Drake hands down. He’s one of the most versatile artist in the world. He raps and sing and he can do every genre and it’s going to be a hit.

4. Do you think your music is mostly enjoyed more for the beats or for the lyrical flow and content?

Definitely the lyrics, content and melodies, I think my melodies is what draws people in then they hear the lyrics with it and they fall in love with my music.

5. Do you write your own lyrics? If yes, what do you think about artists who use ghost writers?

Yea of course I write my own lyrics, I don’t think nothing wrong with having a ghost writer, I write for a few artist myself, some people have amazing voices but their pen doesn’t add up with their voice, but me personally I can’t have someone writing for me, I just wouldn’t feel right.

6. If you could choose to work with some of today’s established artists or producers, to move your game to the top, with whom would you like to collaborate?

Chris Brown & Justin Bieber

7. Which latest songs, videos or mixtapes releases are currently available to your fans and where can they be heard or downloaded?

I just dropped a single called “Mr Clean” that’s on all streaming platforms. I dropped a video on YouTube called “Lord Save Me” July 23rd. And I have 3 albums available on all streaming platforms, Revived, Haymaker and Bipolar.

8. Which ingredient do you think is most essential in making your sound and style the way it is?

My melodies and lyrics definitely, the way I combine the two is crazy, I just go in the studio and put a beat on and harmonize, once I get the harmony and flow I just put the lyrics in and it comes out a master piece every time.

9. Which emotion more than any other, currently dominates your music? Joy, sadness, anger or passion etc. , and why?

All of them. I’m in the studio everyday and I’m always going thru different emotions, I can be mad, sad, happy, depressed etc. and I’ll make a song of what I’m feeling because it’s pure and I feel like I make my best music at those times.

10. What aspect of the music making process excites you most, and what aspect discourages you the most?

The most exciting part is recording the songs, putting out snippets, getting good feedback. The discouraging part is not getting the views/streams and recognition I feel the song deserves.

11. How involved are you in the recording, producing, mastering, marketing, and other processes needed to make and sell your music, and do you outsource any part of these processes?

I record, mix and master all my own music. I also promote my music and use promotional tools such as social media ads and pushing my music thru Apple Music and Spotify playlist, I have several different producers and graphic designers I like to use for my projects, and I distribute all my music thru Distrokid.

12. Do you think the advent of internet and all the new technology has helped your music and independent musicians in general, or do you think it just creates a mass of mediocre “copycats” who flood the web, making it difficult to distinguish yourself?

I think it helps out a lot, it created a bigger platform for me and I was able to expand and gain fans over seas. Once you create good content and put it on the internet, you can go from 0 to a million views in a day.

13. What in your opinion is the biggest barrier an artist like yourself, has to face and overcome, to gain any commercial success?

Asking/excepting help, I been doing everything on my own for so long that when people that can possibly put me in position try to help I deny because the 1st thing I think is their trying to get over me

14. In closing, tell us something about any projects and ideas you have in store or are already working on as well as where people can find your music.

I’m currently working on two albums one is a solo album called A.R.K (Act Of Random Kindness) witch is a positive album, dropping jewels and helping people rather it’s thru depression, relationship, uplifting people etc.

The second album I’m working is a collaboration album with Montana Of 300 & Jalyn Sanders, we having came up with a name for album yet.

Y’all can find my music in all streaming platforms Apple Music, Spotify, Google Play, Tidal, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and many other platforms @ Od Quake.
