This is a little much, no?
Beyonce‘s latest album, her self-titled effort Beyonce, has sparked several conversations and controversies, mainly centered around feminism and whether or not its a good idea for her to flaunt her sexuality as often and continuously as she did on the multi-platinum LP.
Very recently, at a speaking engagement at The New School, Bell Hook–whose real name is Gloria Watkins–referred to Beyonce as a “terrorist,” due to the sexual nature of her latest LP’s content. Hook has spent most of her career speaking and writing about race, gender and socioeconomic issues from a feminine, post-modern perspective. Feminism has played a huge role in her literary work, and in her 1984 publication, Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center, Cook examined just how much the feminist narrative has been marginalized in modern society.
During a speech, the subject of Bey came up, and she had this to say:
I see a part of Beyonce that is, in fact, anti-feminist — that is a terrorist, especially in terms of the impact on young girls. I actually feel like the major assault on feminism in our society has come from visual media and from television and videos.
The speech spanned many topics and Hooks’ critique of Bey’s latest musical venture only made up for a very small portion of the overall talk, which you can watch in its entirety here.
