When it comes to being lyrically articulate, Freddie Gibbs is the man who consistently delivers. And with today’s release of his album Shadow Of A Doubt, Gangsta Gibbs flexes his true skills as a lyricist and storyteller.
The 15-track album (including two bonus tracks, “My Boy” and “10 Chickens”) contains features from Gucci Mane, E-40, Tory Lanez, ManMan Savage, Black Thought of The Roots and Dane Williams, accompanied with production from Blair Norf, Boi-1da, Frank Dukes, Kaytranada, Mike Dean, Murda Beatz and Tarentino of 808 Mafia.
It’s been a year since the release of Gibbs’ last album Piñata, a collaborative with Madlib that debuted at 39 on the Billboard 200 chart. Since then Gibbs has been touring, releasing an EP and a few collaborations, along with cultivating his own strain of cannabis called “Freddie Kane OG” and experiencing fatherhood with the birth of his daughter Irie.
Piñata provided Gibbs with some shine that was long overdue, and he could have easily rode off that wave for a bit. Thankfully he didn’t, because Shadow Of A Doubt could be his best work to date.
When he gave us a few early teasers to foreshadow the album like “Fu*kin’ Up the Count” and “Extradite” feat. Black Thought, maybe you were taken aback; curious to the direction he was going in. After listening to the body of work as a whole, the bigger picture reflective of Gibbs’ personal progression and versatility, it becomes clear this is his pivotal album.
