Ever have the urge to just pull out a weapon in frustration at Trump’s existence? Keith Richards understands. In 1989, the Rolling Stones rocker did just that.
Michael Cohl, the band’s tour producer, was hoping to get The Stones some extra money by making their Atlantic City stop on the Steel Wheels tour a pay-per-view event. He needed a promoter who had millions to spare, but The Stones did not want to be associated with The Donald. With Cohl omitting some facts, The Stones agreed to the proposition of the event.
The donor indeed ended up being Trump, as no one else was willing to shell out, and the band were not happy. They made a deal that Trump wouldn’t actually be allowed to attend the show itself, or be involved in any promotion outside of Atlantic City. However, Cohl overheard that Trump was preparing for a press conference where The Stones were heading into a promotional interview with CBS, and couldn’t stop him.
Keith, furious, called Cohl in to speak, slamming a knife on the table in front of him: “What the hell do I have you for? Do I have to go over there and fire him myself? One of us is leaving the building – either him, or us.” Cohl assured the band he’d take care of it. He told Trump he had to leave or The Stones would not be performing. Finally, and surprisingly, Trump gave in and left.
