Microsoft announced it would shut down Skype, the video-calling platform it acquired for $8.5 billion in 2011. Services will officially be retired on May 5, 2025, with users encouraged to migrate to Microsoft Teams.
During the transition, Skype users can log into Teams using their existing credentials, allowing them to retain chats and contacts. Microsoft has also enabled cross-platform communication, ensuring Skype and Teams users can message and call each other seamlessly.
For those opting out of Teams, Microsoft offers the option to export Skype data, including chat history and contacts.
To get started with Teams, users can download the app from the official Microsoft Teams website and log in with their Skype credentials. Microsoft has also provided a step-by-step guide to help with the transition.
Skype will remain operational until May 2025, allowing users time to explore Teams and switch at their own pace.
