The world of music is mourning the loss of D’Wayne Wiggins, a visionary artist, mentor, and founding member of the legendary R&B group Tony! Toni! Toné! The Wiggins family has confirmed that he passed away surrounded by loved ones after a private and courageous battle with bladder cancer.
In a heartfelt statement, his family shared, “D’Wayne’s life was incomparable, and his music and service impacted millions around the world, including in his hometown of Oakland, California. He remained committed and present for his family, his music, his fans, and his community throughout his fight.”
A Musical Legacy That Defined Generations
D’Wayne Wiggins was more than just a musician—he was a cultural force whose impact on R&B, hip-hop, and soul stretched far beyond his own success. As a guitarist, producer, and composer, he helped shape a sound that remains influential decades later.
In 1987, Wiggins, along with his brother Raphael Saadiq and cousin Timothy Christian Riley, formed Tony! Toni! Toné! The group released five classic albums—Who? (1988), The Revival (1990), Sons of Soul (1993), House of Music (1996), and Hits (1997)—becoming one of the most celebrated R&B acts of their time. With 14 Billboard-charting singles, five number-one R&B hits, and over six million albums sold, their music remains in heavy rotation today.
After the group’s final album, Wiggins continued to thrive as a producer and mentor, working with industry giants including Carlos Santana, Darius Rucker, Jamie Foxx, E-40, and India Arie. One of his most significant achievements was signing and producing Destiny’s Child under his Grass Roots Entertainment label in 1996, playing a crucial role in the early careers of Beyoncé, Kehlani, Alicia Keys, Keyshia Cole, Zendaya, H.E.R., and many more.
A Mentor and Advocate for Young Artists
Beyond his own success, Wiggins was dedicated to uplifting young musicians. His non-profit organization in East Oakland provided after-school programming, including Tony’s School of Music (TSM) and Poplyfe, the teen pop band that gained national recognition on America’s Got Talent. His passion for artist development shaped the careers of many stars who continue to carry his influence.
His commitment extended beyond the U.S., as he worked to create platforms for emerging artists from the Bay Area to Ghana. Even in his final years, he remained active in the music scene, touring with Tony! Toni! Toné! and participating in the highly anticipated Raphael Saadiq Revisits Tony! Toni! Toné! Just Me and You Tour in 2023, which played to sold-out audiences across 25 cities.
Honoring a True Pioneer
D’Wayne Wiggins’ contributions to music and culture have been recognized by the Recording Academy, American Music Awards (AMA), NAACP, ASCAP, and the Heroes and Legends (HAL) Scholarship Fund.
