Hailing from New York, Twins Tahir and Tyrell Perkins—better known as the Blk.ID Twins—have emerged as internationally acclaimed DJs and entrepreneurial forces. Their journey began unexpectedly during a visit with their older cousin, DJ Perks, who introduced them to the art of the mix. “We went over his house and messed with the turntables… then a few years later, he gifted us his set of turntables,” Tahir recalls. That initial spark ignited a powerful lifelong passion for DJing.
Their debut performance wasn’t a professional gig—it was a family celebration. Yet, that moment revealed their natural talent: the ability to feel the crowd, sense what works, and deliver accordingly. Now seasoned performers, the twins refine their sets with a technique they call “taste testing”: playing sample tracks during warm-ups to read the audience’s mood, then crafting their music selection to elevate the energy.
Despite their versatility across genres, the Blk.ID Twins have often confronted limiting expectations. “Some venues didn’t want to book us because they ‘didn’t want to hear hip hop’,” Tyrell explains, even though their repertoire spans far beyond it. Yet they’ve turned these challenges into strengths. Once perceived as outsiders, their authenticity and confidence have become their calling cards: “We know who we are—and it’s always been us against the world,” says Tyrell. “Often, people judge a book by its cover, then fall in love once they start reading.”
Armed with undeniable talent and a unique connection to diverse audiences, the Blk.ID Twins have elevated their DJ careers into a thriving brand. They’ve shared stages with major players like Samsung and Meta, and brought their signature sound to venues around the world.
