Broke Dude Offers His Nikes As Bail, Judge Says ‘OK’

This judge’s demand just went way up

Jason Duval is a Massachusetts man in the middle of a divorce that was desperately in need of a break, and he ran into the perfect judge at the perfect time. Judge Douglass Stoddart of the people Framingham District was on the verge of jailing Duval for unpaid court fees from a 2012 drug case when Stoddart threw Duval a lifeline.

I’ll give you a chance to be creative. If you can come up with a creative idea to convince me that you’ll come back, I’ll work with you.

Duval, on the spot, had a bright idea. The kind of bright idea that makes for a ‘you won’t believe what happened at work today’ at a judge’s dinner table. However, his hail mary pass worked.

Due to the divorce he was working through, Duval didn’t have any money to present the court, but he got these cool Nike kicks for Christmas, and offered them up as bail to Judge Stoddart. Shockingy, Stoddart took Duval’s too-literal-translation of “be creative,” valued at $85, straight to the bank. Duval was granted bail.

“OK,” said Judge Stoddart. “We’ll take them.”
