When Mark McGwire was traded to the Cardinals in 1997, Jason Giambi replaced him as the Oakland A’s first basemen. His production helped his team get to the playoffs. In his first full season he had 33 home runs, which meant that losing McGwire turned out to not so bad for the A’s. Well, until he left for the Yankees in 2002. However, they did narrowly dodge a bullet thanks to his departure.

In 2003, Giambi admitted to a grand jury that he had taken steroids. He was a part of the BALCO scandal that would rock the entire league. It was sad that he went to such lengths to compete, but fans were happy that he came clean. He urged others to also admit their wrongdoings, but his words fell on deaf ears.
