Battle Rap’s Top 5 Dark Horses

3. Yung Ill

Not unlike QP, ill is overcoming a pretty bad performance/public breakdown, which, in the battle rap game can take some time to overcome. Also like QP, Ill is an innovator, a beast when he is at his best. But let’s be clear, Yung Ill is nothing like QP. His style, his flow, his whole swag is on the opposite side of the spectrum.  The St. Louis rapper brought major innovation to the URL arena. He complicated the schemes and wordplay that the culture was used to, forcing the competition to write harder and better. Though Ill is a good performer, he almost doesn’t need it.  Watch him in battles like the one above. He may not be the louder, more aggressive contender, but he still crushes the competition.  Still, Ill showed weakness in his last battle, which can be terribly detrimental in the battle rap world, where what you say or do can and will be used against you. If URL would release his battle against Conceited, it would likely go a long way toward bringing him back as it was without question one of his best performances. If the footage stays vaulted, Ill has a hard road ahead.
