According to ESPN, this surgery will address thoracic outlet syndrome in Harvey’s shoulder. This condition effects the nerves and blood flow in the shoulder area, and have caused Harvey to temporarily loose feeling in his shoulder and finger tips.

Harvey’s agent, Scott Boras, told ESPN it was this condition that has been causing Harvey to under-perform this season. Harvey has struggled, with a 4-10 record and a 4.86 ERA in 17 starts this season.

Despite Harvey’s struggles, the Mets have had a good season so far, sitting in 2nd place in the NL East, only 3 games behind the Washington Nationals, with a 47-38 record. The Mets are currently in a series with the Nationals, having won the first game yesterday [Thursday, July 7], and will play them through the weekend until the All-Star break at the beginning of next week.
