How The “No Shopping” Video Boosted The French Montana/Drake Collab To A New Dimension

Five million views in two days? Movie. French Montana and Drake finally shared the much anticipated visual for “No Shopping” and the two did not disappoint. Just when you think no one buys albums anymore, Drake cracks all kinds of album sales records, and just when you think that videos are irrelevant, Drake is featured in one that takes a single to a new world. That’s exactly where “No Shopping” is right now, a new world. A few things assisted in this, and we’re going to break them down for you.

Pump, pump, pump it up.

Whether Drake or French admits the 6 god was shooting at Joe Budden or not, it’s no secret Drake used “No Shopping” to ambiguously do so. No harm, the “Pump It Up” rapper is still firing off aimless diss tracks, and “No Shopping” has become a dangerously popular, and quotable rap song. The fact that Drake has made a practice out of turning diss verses into hit verses gives him all of the stripes that he needs. Joe Budden has made the….beef? more credible now with his recent string of freestyles, and his handling of the Drake fan situation, but for the most part it’s still being viewed as him throwing rocks at the throne. Drake’s “No Shopping” verse didn’t kill him off by all means either, but it did add play value to the song, and within the video gave Drake mad amounts of flex points. “I’m not a one hit wonder, they know all my stuff, how you let me turn into the person that you almost was” didn’t help Joe’s case either, but watching Drake rap even a subtle diss certainly helped “No Shopping”.

French really makes hits.

Sometimes a song, or even an entire catalog can surpass the person it belongs to. French Montana can be a victim of this at times. French creates bangers, but a lot of times his bangers feature so many heavy weights the songs take on a life of its own, or it becomes the featured artists’ song. “No Shopping”, because of the story line surrounding it instantly became about Drake and Joe Budden. But, with the video being released, and viewers being able to see French partying in the video, and actually put a face to the hit, gives him a lot more credibility than if their was no video. This is important. It’s summertime, French Montana and Drizzy are partying hard, there’s beautiful women around them, and this will allow them to maybe slide in a couple more summer anthems together, or maybe even just French, or French with another artist. Marketability is key, and although French has a distinct sound that will always let you know that it’s him, “haaaaan”, seeing him on screen, in his own video, with only one other artist will only help his cause.

Twitter took it to a new level.

By now you’ve seen a few different minute long clips from the “No Shopping” video that compelled you to watch the entire clip. Twitter is a millennial’s main news source, and once it hits Twitter the masses will flock. The “No Shopping” video hit Twitter for many different reasons. Of course, the opening scene seeing Drake and French dabble in a little acting. Seeing Drake in those thong slippers with a suit got the people going, the girls and whether the world found them attractive or not, Drake with the Budden shots. Twitter will dissect, and it’s the perfect representation of any press being good press. Another video that will probably hit Twitter, and catch steam like this is a video for “For Free”, if Khaled decides to go down that road. That song is certainly a grow on you kind of song, just like “No Shopping”, and a visual would take it over the top. Shouts to French for a successful release, and for being smart about the Drizzy touch, these two always make magic together.
