Lena Waithe has had a pretty successful last few years of her career. In 2017, she became the first Black woman to win a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for writing Master of None’s “Thanksgiving” episode featuring guest appearances from Angela Bassett, Kym Whitley and Eden Duncan-Smith, her series The Chi is a hit and fan favorite on Showtime, and her 2019 movie Queen And Slim was both a critical and commercial success.
However, news came earlier this week that after two months of marriage, she and her wife, Alana Mayo, are calling it quits.
She had made her secret marriage public on The Ellen DeGeneres Show back in November. She stated that she and her spouse had gone to a courthouse in San Francisco and got married on an impulse. “…she was just driving and she saw the courthouse and she said, ‘We should get married there.’ And I said, ‘Cool, I’m down,’” Waithe stated.
The Chi creator released this statement earlier this week. “After careful thought and consideration, we have decided to part ways,” they said in a joint statement from their reps. “We have nothing but support for one another and ask that you respect our privacy during this time.”
After news of the couple’s split, people took to social media to spread rumors that Waithe’s supposed cheating might be the reason for the split. A blog post by Love B. Scott made the rumors that Waithe had cheated on Mayo. Scott claims that sources close to her say that Waithe and Mayo’s marriage began on the rocks.
In her blog post, Scott states that “…according to our sources — the quickie wedding came after multiple instances of Lena’s infidelity. Lena went along with it as a way to placate Alana and salvage their relationship. Despite their official union, Lena’s alleged cheating continued.”
After hearing the news that Waithe was splitting from her wife due to infidelity, fans took to social media to drag Waithe for promoting black women in her shows and movies but going then allegedly cheating on her significant other with Academy Award Nominee Cynthia Erivo.
Waithe has not commented further on the situation.
