Just a few hours ago, Trump ordered the withdraw of the National Guard Troops from Washington D.C. after days of protests over the killings of George Floyd, Ahamaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor.
“I have just given an order for our National Guard to start the process of withdrawing from Washington, D.C., now that everything is under perfect control. They will be going home, but can quickly return, if needed,” Trump tweeted.
His announcement on Sunday morning followed his tweet from Saturday night that thanked the National Guard, Secret Service and D.C. police for doing a “fantastic job” responding to the protests.
Washington D.C Mayor, Muriel Bowser, sent a letter to Trump on Friday asking that he withdraw all “extraordinary federal law enforcement and military presence.” In her letter, Bowser stated how the protests had been peaceful and the police did not make a “single arrest” the previous two nights.
Earlier this week, Trump had essentially called for martial law. He demanded that officials in every state call the national guard to the cities where people were protesting, and if they refused, he would send the military to their city without their permission.
