At midnight the U.S. government could shut down, causing thousands of federal employees to start their holiday weekend without their bi-weekly checks. And who would be the Grinch that is stealing the 2018 Christmas joy? You guessed it: Donald Trump (POTUS).
As soon as 12:00am, the shutdown could be in full effect. Senate Dems and the POTUS are at each other’s neck, in dispute of one of Trump’s most controversial campaign promises to build a wall along the Mexican border. The Senate has been skewing up for a vote to advance a bill to dump an additional $5 billion in for the wall. You may have heard about this wall… Candidate Trump told the voters that he was going to guarantee that Mexico was going to pay for it. Now he wants Americans to pay for it with their hard earned tax dollars and Senate Dems (lead by New York Senior Senator Chuck Schumer) are working hard to stand their ground.
Their position is that there are alternative ways to police the border without building the costly wall.
While the two sides seem to be working fiercely to come to an agreement, the question remains to be seen if they are hearing each other. Last week, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Schumer met with Trump in the Oval Office, where their disdain seemed to ooze out live on TV.
Over the last 24 hours, it seem Trump has been in full rowdy mode, maintaining that he is not accepting anything less than the $5B that he claims he needs. The bill will probably fail as the GOP doesn’t have the votes to pass it.
If this shutdown happens, it won’t be the entire government. Appropriations for the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice, the Department of Housing and Urban Development and other parts of the government will be hit hard. Seems like again, this president doesn’t really care about the average working folk… even those that work directly for him.
