Every year, there’s the new trap star. In 2012 Chief Keef shed light on the fledgling Chicago movement fondly referred to as drill, highlighted by several members of his 3Hunna clique, and last year we were alerted of the many talents of Atlanta rap group Migos and solo artist Que, who have aroused the attention of Jay Z, Drake, J. Cole & R. Kelly. Late last year, we saw the meteoric rise of Gucci Mane understudy and former Brick Squad rapper Young Thug, whose ubiquitous single, “Danny Glover” has caused Drake

…and Kanye West

to lose their minds in the club.

His most recent album, 1017 Thug, has ended up on nearly everyone’s year-end list, including ours, and he’s transcended being a cult favorite. He entered 2014 as quite possibly the hottest rapper in the game (save Drake, who hasn’t been able to relinquish that title in quite some time) and he’s subsequently hit the ground running. He’s released new music with frequent collaborator Bloody Jay, and Meek Mill, and is working on the follow-up project to 1017 Thug, #hiTunes.

In an exclusive interview with Complex this morning, Thug revealed that he and Kanye are more than just two figures pieced together by social media. He was recently at Kanye’s house recording music, two new songs with the Yeezus rapper, to be exact.

But if Kanye calls and says “I want a Young Thug feature on this song” you’re there in no time, no?

I mean, I went to his house and we did a couple of songs. The fact that I was [making songs] so fast amazed him too, because he doesn’t see a lot of people who rap like that. I don’t really rap with a lot of people [because] everyone raps the same way. When I first heard he wanted to know who I was and do songs, I was smiling ear to ear like a clown.

It’s the year of the Thug, indeed.
