Today in Hip Hop history, LL Cool J released his sophomore LP Bigger and Deffer (abbreviated B.A.D.). Selling over three million copies in the United States alone, Bigger and Deffer served as a mainstream success in a pivotal time in Hip Hop history. In 1987 Hip Hop began its rise to pop culture prominence. The scene became saturated with prolific levels of talent, with emcee’s abilities and longevity put to the test. With this project, LL was able to stand strong as an icon in an ever-evolving genre.
Although some may categorize this project as a pop-rap crossover, LL’s true to Hip Hop style, demeanor, and lyricism proved otherwise. The ferocity of LL’s opening track “I’m Bad” alone shows that he did not come to play. This album also showed the depth of LL’s rhyme style and appeal, with the single “I Need Love” which instantly cemented him as the era’s official heartthrob and proving that ladies really do love Cool James. LL also showcased his ability as a beat maker, having his hand in the production of each of the album’s tracks.
Commercially this album and its singles were hits, all selling platinum amounts of albums and making appearances on charts across the globe. The album itself peaked at #3 on the Billboard 200 and topped the Top R&B/Hip Hop charts. BAD even claimed spots on charts in Germany, New Zealand, and UK and was certified gold in Canada selling over 50,000 copies.
For every great moment, there’s a song that goes with it. We believe this is the SOUNDTRACK OF YOUR LIFE – SOL REPUBLIC.
