Zarriel Trotter, a 13-year-old boy from Chicago, was injured this weekend in a neighborhood shooting. Trotter is an anti-violence advocate, who appeared in a public service video last year aimed at fighting gun violence. He is also a mentor at his school.
The video, titled “Black Is Human,” features Trotter speaking about the ongoing violence in his community: “I don’t want to live around my community, where I’ve got to keep on hearing and hearing people keep on getting shot, people keep on getting killed.”
On Friday [March 25], a fight broke out between two groups in his neighborhood and Trotter was hit in the back by a stray bullet. He wasn’t involved with either of the groups. He was brought to the hospital in critical condition and quickly underwent surgery.
There are no updates on Trotter’s condition as of yet. Family and officials declined to comment.
