While most people who opposed the George Zimmerman verdict protested by marching with hoodies on and black- ing out their profile pics on Facebook, the Dream Defend- ers maintained a classic, yet effective approach to bringing about a change in our society. The Miami-based youth group organized a 25 day sit-in at Florida governor Rick Scott’s office, demanding that the state’s “Stand Your Ground” law be re-examined. Not only did the DD crew set up voter drives targeting the 61,500 votes that got Governor Scott elected, but they also forced Florida’s House of Representatives to review the controversial law that became the centerpiece of discussion after the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. Enter- ing the fall semester, the Dream Defenders have planned to establish chapters at Florida International University, Miami Dade College, Florida A&M, Florida State, and the Universi- ties of Florida, Central Florida, and South Florida. —Sha Be Allah
